In honor of Shakespeare’s birthday, West-Park Presbyterian Church is offering an evening of reinterpretations and remixes of the sonnets! Drawing from the wide community of artists, free – thinkers, and community leaders that work and perform at the church, the evening will feature wildly different responses to Shakespeare’s poetry and celebrate the West-Park community.

Concert of Eastern European Polyphony

Featuring vocal folk music from the nations of
Georgia and Ukraine

The West Park Church will host an evening of Ukrainian and Georgian polyphony bringing this ancient music to the Upper West Side. How better to celebrate spring than with a concert of music from two traditional societies rooted in nature? Help West Park Church survive and thrive and support relief efforts in Ukraine.

Supruli is a NYC-based choir, founded in 2009, devoted to the traditional folk and liturgical polyphony of the Republic of Georgia. Georgian polyphonic singing has been declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. A Georgian folk song was also included on the Golden Record launched into space on the Voyager Spacecraft in 1977, one example of earth’s finest musical achievements. Directed by Carl Linich.

Ukrainian Village Voices is a culturally diverse group of folk singers and community organizers, uniting members of the Ukrainian community and the larger folk music community in the NYC metro area. Since 2013, the ensemble has performed for various audiences in the United States and Canada, in venues ranging from festivals and theaters to museums, libraries, and even street corners. UVV regularly organizes singing workshops led by accomplished musicians and scholars from near and abroad. .Hiroshima Peace Concert East Winds Concert Series An evening of Koto and Shakuhachi music Friday, May 1, 2015 at 8:00PM

This wonderful group of traditional Japanese music will present a spring musical celebration from Hiroshima, Japan. The Hiroshima Hougaku Federation Ensemble will bring their message of Peace with this special concert in New York.
This unique concert of timeless Japanese music performed on the Shakuhachi and the Koto will dazzle your senses and transport you to Japan.
HHF will also perform at the United Nations and at area schools previous to the concert, which will offer a great chance for photo opportunity.

This will be a unique concert by two amazing masters of Japanese music: Tomoko Fukumori and Marco Lienhard. The concert will include traditional as well as modern compositions and will include songs to commemorate the victims of the Tsunami.

Proceeds from the concerts will support East Winds, Inc.’s inner city school programs and free community park concerts.

As part of the national “Big Read” event, West-Park Presbyterian Church will be serving as one of the community sites for this event sponsored nationally by the National Endowment for the Arts and locally by Goddard-Riverside and the New York Public Library. This year’s book for “1 Book 1 Community” is by Dinaw Mengestu. While the book is from an Ethiopian immigrant, it opens up a much broader conversation about the experiences of immigration.  We will be having a book discussion on Monday, February 16th at 7PM.  West-Park Presbyterian Church has received 4 free books — the first 4 to call the office at 212.362.4890 can have them …more to come….!!!!!
